NEWS RELEASE 2nd SC REGIMENT PICKENS CAMP 71 SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS March 20, 1998 Camp 71, SCV has retained legal counsel. The SOUTHERN LEGAL RESOURCE CENTER is a South Carolina based corporation, attorney Lourie A. Salley executive director. During regular business hours he may be reached by calling 803-957-1036. The SLRC is a network of attorneys across the South whose purpose is to represent Southern citizens whose rights have been violated. The SOUTHERN LEGAL RESOURCE CENTER is now aggressively preparing legal action against the Pickens Civitan Club, its members, and any other entities, political or private, or individuals associated with them in connection with the Pickens Azalea Festival to be held Saturday, April 18. The Pickens Azalea Festival is a community festival held on public property in the city of Pickens in early April. During the festival Main St. is blocked to traffic and booths fill the area normally occupied by traffic. The city of Pickens provides direct financial support to the festival through the city Police Department that provides security and the Sanitation Department that provides cleanup after the festival ends. The city of Pickens, represented through its elected Mayor and Council, is a partner with the Pickens Civitan Club in practicing discrimination against Camp 71, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Their collaborative actions deprive members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans of their right of free speech that is protected by the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution. The Pickens Civitan Club is a service organization with an IRS designation, 501 C 3. As such they are forbidden to employ discriminatory practices. Bob Jones University was threatened with lose of 501 C 3 status because federal authorities determined that they violated this provision of the IRS code. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a patriotic, historical, educational, benevolent, non-political, non-racial, non-sectarian organization. The SCV is also a 501 C 3 organization, which does not practice prohibited discrimination. In keeping with our constitution and the legal regulations under which we operate, Camp 71 is collecting funds for the relief for tornado victims in Kissimme Florida.
