NEWS UPDATE 2nd SC REGIMENT PICKENS CAMP 71 SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS 3/26/98 8:43 AM Discussions between the city of Pickens, Civitans and Camp 71, SCV and it's attorneys are now taking place. We are hopeful that the Civitans will agree to rescind their decision to exclude the Sons of Confederate Veterans. If we have not received news of positive results this week, Camp 71 will proceed with other avenues. Mr. Ned Sloan (288-2032) contacted the Southern Legal Resource Center in Lexington and asked if the ACLU could be of any help with this situation. We will be applying to the city of Pickens for a parade permit for April 18. We have requested permission from Pickens County Clerk of Court the use of the County Courthouse grounds for a protest to be held April 18. Federal courts have consistently held that our use of these facilities cannot be denied for the purpose we intend. Camp 71, SCV does not desire the Civitans to continue their policy of exclusion and confrontation. However we are prepared to continue this struggle to a successful conclusion. It is regrettable that Mr. Michael Chastain and the Civitans have acted with bigotry via their policy of censorship through exclusion. Camp 71 deplores any action by any group that practices censorship of freedom of speech. An agreement not forthcoming, we will proceed with legal action.
