In order to preserve and maintain an appreciation of the heritage and history of the Confederate States of America, a scholarship of five hundred dollars will be awarded to a local area high school senior by Camp 71 Sons of Confederate Veterans. All high school seniors in private, parochial or public schools are eligible and are invited to apply.

Applicants must:

Complete the application in their own handwriting.

Write and essay of five to seven pages, prepared on a word processor using double spaced lines and printed on a printer. The subject must be, "Why Southern Heritage is important to me". Sources should be listed at the end of the essay.

Submit three letters of recommendation. One must be from the student's pastor. The second recommendation must be from an educator who may be teacher, counselor, or school administrator. The third recommendation must be from someone who can relate information on the student's civic responsibilities or positive community action.

Be accepted by and use the scholarship in a post-secondary institution in any of the following states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas or Tennessee.

Submit the application, essay, and recommendations to the senior counselor who is to complete the counselor section of the application and forward the entire packet to the following address.

The scholarship committee of the 2nd SC Regiment Pickens Camp # 71, Sons of Confederate Veterans will determine the recipient of the scholarship based on the application, the essay, and the letters of recommendation. The committee must receive all applications before April 30.
